In 2016, Interfaith Prison Ministry for Women sponsored the first songwriting class in the women’s prison in Raleigh. In ten weeks, ten women wrote over two dozen new songs—songs that could pass through prison walls. Over the next three years, what became known as “the Conviction Band” shared this incredible music with dozens of communities and congregations across North Carolina. Now, with many of the songwriters living free in North Carolina, we’re finally taking these songs into the studio.
Our team of songwriters will be working together to arrange, record, and produce each song in a way that fully expresses the artist's vision. These songs are about how women get to prison: grief, addiction, abuse, and loss-of-self. They're about seeking justice and freedom while serving time. They're about falling in love with partners, children, God, and making peace with all people. Some are funny. Some are sad. Some celebrate victory and some reckon with defeat. Together, this collection of songs is a testament to the strength and wisdom of women who choose to rise when the world would hold them down. We hope you’ll share this campaign with your friends, families, and networks and help us spread Conviction far and wide.
