This individual will work collaboratively with our engaged staff and board to develop strategies and platforms that increase awareness and support for IPMW’s work among internal and external audiences and communicate the range of exciting work upon which we are embarking. The ideal candidate will have an ability to replicate the organization’s unique voice in engaging ways, while building our voice as a thoughtful advocate for change as our direction expands. Currently reporting to the CEO, this is a new position that will enhance the capacity of IPMW to sustain the range of exciting work we have undertaken, allowing you to make your mark as IPMW continues on its growth trajectory. This position requires ordinary ambulatory skills as well as the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and occasionally manipulate (lift, carry, move) light weights; hand-eye-foot coordination; arm, hand and finger dexterity, visual acuity; and the use of auditory senses. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable those with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
WORK REQUIREMENTS
This is primarily an off-site position, though occasional attendance at in-person meetings and events is preferred. Base schedule is negotiable. Some evenings, weekends and holidays are required. IPMW staff will continue to move toward a hybrid model of working in the field, remotely, and in our downtown Raleigh offices a few days per week, as conditions allow.
PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS
Must develop and maintain excellent relationships with IPMW staff, board and other stakeholders. Manage relationships with communications consultants, web designers, graphic designers, printers, mail houses, and other communications professionals as needed. Collaborate with staff to produce other materials, as needed.
JOB TYPE
Salaried part-time time exempt position, flexibility in schedule.
SALARY RANGE
$28,000 – $30,000 for 20 hours/week. Generous benefits package includes medical benefits, retirement plan, pre-tax benefits, paid time and leave and other organizational benefits.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications Planning
- Create and implement a communications plan that includes development, implementation and maintenance of branding, marketing, public relations and social media strategies.
- Develop communications systems and processes that align with the organization’s mission and overall strategic plans andpromote and support IPMW’s culture, vision, and values.
- Make recommendations to drive engagement through innovative approaches and tools as well as high-quality storytelling that helps to keep constituencies informed.
- Develop processes and practices to implement strategic, rapid response communications related to opportunities, threats and changes in the internal and external environment.
- Produce and edit various print materials, including annual reports, brochures, newsletters, flyers, fact sheets, talking points, “how to” guides, fundraising campaigns, etc.
Communications Rebranding and Strategy
- Participate in the creation of strategy for and launch of IPMW’s new brand.
- Oversee the creation of the organization’s new website and other marketing collateral.
- Ensure that internal and external print and digital materials and media conform to internal brand standards, honor institutional partnerships, and reach and resonate with a variety of diverse audiences.
- Drive the development of culturally competent, values-based messaging for all IPMW communications content and publications; help to translate content into simple, digestible, compelling messages and information in diverse formats.
- Keep the organization’s website up-to-date with new information and content.
- Coordinate the creation and distribution of monthly newsletters; write, adapt and regularly post and curate content for newsletters, and on social media channels.
- Build and update media lists and databases.
- Coordinate the creation of video clips and photo for online use.
- Produce a limited number of original pieces of content, which would appear as feature pieces in our newsletter and on social media.
- Draft and edit press materials, including press releases, media advisories, and memos; conduct press outreach as needed
- Develop content pillars and bring creative thinking to the table on how to engage target audiences and create content that gets people sharing and talking.
- Promote engagement with followers and coordination of staff and board toward communications efforts.
- Provide consultation and assistance for organizational statements and media opportunities.
- Use analytics and testing to make data driven decisions about content performance and success, as it relates to goal-setting for key campaigns and strategic planning processes.
- Attend staff meetings, 1:1s and team meetings.
- Attend IPMW board meetings, retreats, and committee meetings, as needed.
- Participate in partner meetings related to the work of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES
· Inclusive and empathetic worldview with demonstrated skill working across lines of difference.
- Experience working with nonprofits on the creation and implementation of communication strategies; degree in communications or related field a plus.
- Substantial experience in strategic communications and media relations, ideally in an “in-house” role within a nonprofit organization. Three to five years, preferred.
- Successful brand development and brand management experience.
- Sensitivity to the issues with which IPMW engages and the spaces it occupies.
- Demonstrated ability to generate creative ideas to reshape dominant narratives about our constituencies and work and engage the broader public around them.
- Extensive writing and editing experience with a variety of print and digital; ability to write in an engaging way for a wide audience; excellent editing skills.
- Experience with marketing, advertising, and public relations.
- An ability to articulate discrete strategies for different media platforms and adapt content to the different audiences and interests of each.
- Excellent graphic design skills; experience working with content management systems, web development, and graphic design programs; experience with video editing software a plus.
OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Superb organization skills; detail-oriented with strong follow-through and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to direct and manage contract designers, printers, vendors, and other communications support professionals.
- Proficiency in word processing, email programs, and Internet-based communications.
- Ability to give and receive feedback; hear and process constructive criticism and learn from mistakes; and commitment to contributing toward a positive work culture.
- Creative, result-oriented, self-starting, willing to learn, and able to manage an aggressive schedule; willingness to work beyond regular schedule if needed.
- Understanding and appreciation of equity issues, and willingness to grow and learn with a team.
- Passion for and deep commitment to IPMW’s mission; willingness to advocate for equity in and out of the workplace.
- Sense of humor and ability to have fun; patience with imperfection.
- Lived experience and/or knowledge and understanding of NC criminal justice system.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possess valid NC Driver’s License, satisfactory driving record and proof of insurance.
- Must be able to complete and pass NCDPS-required background check.
